UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII invites applications for the position of:

Assistant/Associate Professor (Pos.# 85032 & 83417T)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach graduate, undergraduate and/or medical students according to department needs and priorities.
  • Pursue, conduct and collaborate on research with a focus on cardiovascular disease.
  • Serve as academic advisor to students and/or serve on advanced degree committees.
  • Participate in department, school, and/or University committees
  • Other scholarly duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:

Assistant Professor:

  • D. in a biological science or relevant field from a college or university of recognized standing.
  • Extensive experience in cardiovascular research.
  • A record of high quality first author publications in leading journals.
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching.
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement.
  • Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with students and colleagues reflected through research and teaching collaborations.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain external funding.
  • Current external federal funding support, transferable to JABSOM.
  • Ability to maintain at least half of base salary with external federal salary support.

Associate Professor

  • Same as Assistant Professor plus 4 years at the Assistant Professor level or equivalent.
  • Evidence of proficiency in teaching.
  • Scholarly achievement judged competent and adequate for the rank in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities.
  • Continued evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization, or in other appropriate job-related service activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities, including the supervision of work of assistants when appropriate.
  • Ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues.
  • High quality senior author publications in leading journals.

Desirable qualifications:

Assistant Professor:

  • First and senior author papers in high quality journals.
  • Current external federal funding support, transferable to JABSOM.
  • Research experience in diabetes or metabolic syndrome.
  • Research experience in iPS cells.

Associate Professor:

  • Same as Assistant Professor
  • Demonstrated independence and career initiative.
  • Previous experience with instructing students and/or graduate assistants in a university setting.
  • National recognition for contribution to cardiovascular research.
