An NIH-funded postdoctoral research associate position to study neural mechanisms controlling cardiovascular physiology is available in the Krause laboratory at the University of Florida.  This laboratory uses an integrative approach in order to evaluate neural circuits involved in blood pressure regulation. A particular interest of the group is in determining the mechanism(s) by which psychological and metabolic stressors disrupt these neural circuits and contribute to the co-morbidity among metabolic, cardiovascular and stress-related diseases.  Multiple projects that involve elucidating the role(s) of specific angiotensin- or oxytocin-sensitive neural circuits in the regulation of blood pressure are available to the successful candidate.  For example, the successful candidate may examine the role of the oxytocin, angiotensin type-2 or Mas receptors in limbic brain regions in the cardiovascular and behavioral responses to stress.  Another important area of research involves the evaluating the role of angiotensin receptors within the nucleus of the solitary tract in cardiovascular regulation.  The mutli-level approach used by the laboratory spans several molecular, genetic, physiological and behavioral techniques that are performed in laboratory mice. Some examples of the approaches used are: telemetry, which is used to assess cardiovascular parameters; optogenetics, calcium imaging, neuronal tract tracing, mRNAin situhybridization, and immunohistochemistry, which are used to characterize the structure and function of specific sets of neurons; and genetic recombination techniques, which allow for the manipulation of gene expression in specific cellular phenotypes.

Candidates should have a PhD in neuroscience, cardiovascular physiology or a related discipline at the time of appointment, however; exceptional candidates from other disciplines will be considered. Preferred skill-sets include technical experience conducting physiological experiments in mice (i.e., cardiovascular assessments using telemetry and/or the Millar catheter system), experience with neuroanatomical and optogenetic techniques and a conceptual understanding of the neural control of cardiovascular physiology.   The responsibilities of the post-doctoral research associate will include: project development, data acquisition, analysis and evaluation, manuscript preparation, and presentation of findings at lab meetings and scientific conferences.   The post-doctoral associate will also gain experience with grant writing and with mentoring more junior lab members.  Appointment is for 3 years, with each year contingent upon satisfactory progress.  Salary is commensurate with the NIH postdoctoral fellow pay scale.  To apply, please send a cover letter briefly describing your research experience, a detailed CV, and the names and contact information for 3 references to Dr. Eric Krause at   Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
