Question: What is your research on?
Answer: My research investigates potential pathophysiological mechanisms and novel therapeutic management options for patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). Specifically, my project examines the role of low arterial carbon dioxide (hypocapnia) as a possible underlying pathological mechanism for the increase in heart rate and symptoms in patients with POTS. The overall goal of this project is to determine if breathing higher levels of carbon dioxide can serve as a novel therapy for patients with POTS.
Q: How did you get to where you are today?
A: As an undergraduate student in Biological Sciences with a background in clinical patient care as a paramedic, I became interested in clinical research, specifically in cardiology. I began my research journey in 2019 as an undergraduate volunteer and summer student working in an autonomic lab, where I gained foundational knowledge and skills in clinical research. This initial exposure to research in cardiovascular autonomic disorders sparked my interest and served as an important motivation to pursue graduate school—first as a master’s student and now as a PhD student.
Q: What advice do you have for new trainees?
