14 Dec Microneurography Course: Monash Prato Centre, Italy, June 10-21 2024
In partnership with Monash University, the International Society of Microneurography will be holding a comprehensive hands-on microneurography course at the Monash Prato Centre, Italy, on June 10-21 2024. Prato is a picturesque city in Tuscany – 30 minutes by train from Florence.
The comprehensive two-week program costs 1500 Euro (750 Euro per week) and includes lunches, and morning and afternoon teas, but does not include dinners or accommodation. A range of accommodation options is available in Prato:

The course structure is as follows:
Week 1 [Monday June 10 to Friday June 14]:
- The anatomy of peripheral and cranial nerves
- An introduction to the use of tungsten microelectrodes for intraneural recording from myelinated and unmyelinated axons
- Safety and ethics in microneurography
- Electrical and ultrasound guidance of microelectrodes into peripheral and cranial nerves
- Specialist lectures on recording from and identifying single afferents (e.g. muscle spindle, Golgi tendon organ endings, joint receptors, fast-conducting cutaneous mechanoreceptors, C-tactile afferents, C-nociceptive afferents subserving pain and itch) from a variety of nerves.
- Specialist lectures on analytical approaches to studying afferent firing properties
- Hands-on practical experience in microneurography [participants can gain experience by performing supervised microneurography on each other]
The weekend of June 15-16 is free time.
Week 2 [Monday June 17 to Friday June 21]:
- The organization of the autonomic nervous system
- Recording and identifying muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA)
- Recording and identifying skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSNA)
- Recording and identifying vagal afferent and efferent activity
- Specialist lectures on analytical approaches to studying sympathetic and parasympathetic activity
- Hands-on experience in recording MSNA and SSNA [participants will gain experience by performing supervised microneurography on each other, but ethics limitations mean no vagus nerve recordings]
We have had very high interest in this course, but spaces are limited to 40 participants. So, if you are interested in attending, please complete the registration form via the website: www.microneurography.org
On behalf of the ISM Steering Committee – Rochelle Ackerley, Jordi Serra, Barbara Namer, Philip Millar, and Jackie Limberg – we look forward to seeing you in Prato!
